The Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi dedicated IndianOil’s Ennore LNG Terminal to the nation by unveiling the plaque at a glittering function held at Kilambakkam, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu. The event was marked by the august presence of Mr. Banwarilal Purohit, Hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu, Mr. Edappadi K. Palaniswami, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. Pon. Radhakrishnan, Minister of State for Finance and Shipping, Dr. M. Thambidurai, Deputy Speaker, Loksabha, Mr. O. Paneerselvam, Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Ms. K. Maragatham, MP, Mr. M M Kutty, Secretary, MoP&NG, Mr. Sanjiv Singh, Chairman, IndianOil, Mr. G K Satish, Director (P&BD), IndianOil, Mr. S. Senthilkumar, ED I/c (RS), SR, Mr. R. Sitharthan, ED I/c, TNSO and Mr. Arup Sinha, ED (RS), SR.

IndianOil, through its Joint Venture Company, IndianOil LNG Pvt. Ltd., has developed this 5-million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) capacity Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Terminal at Kamarajar Port, Ennore in Tamil Nadu, at a cost of Rs. 5,150 crore. The Ennore Terminal is the first LNG terminal on the east coast in South India, located in Tamil Nadu, which is an untapped natural gas market.

In order to supply natural gas to various consumers, IndianOil is laying a 1244-km pipeline for evacuation of RLNG from Ennore Terminal. The pipeline from Ennore terminal will be passing through Manali—Thiruvallur—Puducherry—Nagapattinam—Madurai—Trichy—Tuticorin—Ramnathpuram and a separate line to Bengaluru via Hosur.

At present, there is very limited gas infrastructure in Tamil Nadu. The terminal would be meeting the gas requirement of Manali area, viz., Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited, Madras Fertilisers Limited, Tamil Nadu Petroproducts, Manali Petrochemicals Ltd. etc. Further, natural gas from Ennore LNG Terminal would also be catering to the gas requirements of the States of Tamil Nadu and parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The LNG Terminal at Ennore will provide added momentum to the economic growth of the region by attracting new industrial projects.

Natural Gas from the terminal would spur the development of upcoming City Gas Distribution networks in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Coimbatore, Salem, Kanchipuram, Ramanathapuram, etc., which in turn would cater to the requirements of piped natural gas for households, CNG for automobiles and clean fuel requirements of commercial establishments and industries.
