BW Magna in Brazil

June 2020

The FSRU BW Magna is moored alongside the terminal in Porto do Açu, Brazil, supporting Gás Natural Açu’s (GNA) project, one of the largest greenfield LNG-to-power projects in Latin America. BW Magna is tailormade to Latin America’s biggest power project and is set to operate for 23 years in Brazil. The vessel is capable of regasifying up to 1,000 million standard cubic feet of natural gas per day, supplying two natural gas-fired combined-cycle thermal power plants with the capacity to generate 3,000 MW. Together, the two thermal plants will generate enough power to serve about 14 million homes, according to GNA.

BW Magna has a storage capacity of 173,400 cubic meters and was delivered from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) shipyard in 2019. She then sailed to Sembawang shipyard in Singapore to undergo additional modifications to ensure that she was perfectly suited to the project needs. She has a state-of-the-art intermediate glycol regasification system and the modifications executed for the project include a full reliquefaction system, ship-to-ship marine loading arms as well as seawater outlet modifications to enable the vessel to send seawater onshore to the power plants. These modifications contribute to energy and emission savings, thereby reducing both BW Magna and the project’s environmental footprints.
